The "2011 Index of Economic Freedom" refers to Australia as one of the Asia–Pacific’s richest countries. With a population of about 22 million and a land mass of 3 million square miles, it is one of the world’s least densely populated countries and one of the most urbanized, with most of the population concentrated in coastal cities. Australia is an internationally competitive producer of services, technologies, and high-value-added manufactured goods. Exports remain heavily focused on mining and agriculture.

According to the "The Economist Intelligence Unit's liveability survey" Australian cities are well placed among the top ten most liveable destinations in the world. The Global livability report is based on a lifestyle survey from around 140 cities worldwide and Australian cities such as Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Adelaide have high ratings in terms of the five categories that made a City livable - Stability, Healthcare, Culture and Environment, Education and Infrastructure.
In 2011, Melbourne Australia takes the crown as the most livable city in the world.
